John Robert Beech was born on 2 July the son of James Dixon Beech and his wife Susan of Ballintemple, Co. Cork. He studied at Edinburgh Vetinary College. He joined the Army and became a veterinary surgeon serving in the Egyption War, being the only soldier to receive a seven clasp medal for the Sudan campaign. Serving until 1894 when he was entered as a Reserve Officer, rejoining for the Boar Wars.In 1894 he married Alexandra Marion of Fasgath, Glenlyon - the widow of John Bullough of Meggerie Castle, Glen Lyon. He served inthe Egyption and South African wars. On 29th September 1914 the London Gazette recprds that Lieutenant Colonel John Robert Beech CMG DSO is taken from the Retired Lists of the Territorial Force. He died from a chill caught in a camp near Louth. John Robert died on 6 November 1915 aged 55 and rests at Innerwick-in-Glenlyon Parish Churchyard.
Note - Alexandra Marion Beech died 5 August 1918 and her entry in the Probate Calendar give the following information :- Beech Alexandra Marion of 62 Queen's Gate South Kensington Middlesex and of Fasgath Blenlyon Perth N.B. widow died 5 August 1918 at Fasgath Probate London 5 November to Ian Bullough retired major H.M. Army Gladys Thompson widow Miles Peel Graham retired captaim H.M. Army and Graham Beech gentleman. Effects £6634 7s

John Alexander McCallum, as his name is spelt on CWGC, was the son opf Alexander and Barbara Jane McCallum of Camusvrachan, Glenlyon. John was born in Foprtingall, Perthshire and enlisted in Meggerine. He served in B Coy, 13th Scottish Horse as Pte 315378 and was KIA on 17 October 1918 aged 23 and rests in Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau.

Note :- A small plaque under the names of the local men, remembers the man who designed and erected the memorial to the fallen in 1921. That man was Alex McCallum, John's father - what better thing can a father build for his son and the villages sons, but a memorial built roadside, that all would see - built with much love and great sadness.
