Lieut. Col. J R Beech, C.M.G., D.S.O. Scottish Horse

John Robert Beech was born on 2 July the son of James Dixon Beech and his wife Susan of Ballintemple, Co. Cork. He studied at Edinburgh Vetinary College. He joined the Army and became a veterinary surgeon serving in the Egyption War, being the only soldier to receive a seven clasp medal for the Sudan campaign. Serving until 1894 when he was entered as a Reserve Officer, rejoining for the Boar Wars.In 1894 he married Alexandra Marion of Fasgath, Glenlyon - the widow of John Bullough of Meggerie Castle, Glen Lyon. He served inthe Egyption and South African wars. On 29th September 1914 the London Gazette recprds that Lieutenant Colonel John Robert Beech CMG DSO is taken from the Retired Lists of the Territorial Force. He died from a chill caught in a camp near Louth. John Robert died on 6 November 1915 aged 55 and rests at Innerwick-in-Glenlyon Parish Churchyard.
Note - Alexandra Marion Beech died 5 August 1918 and her entry in the Probate Calendar give the following information :- Beech Alexandra Marion of 62 Queen's Gate South Kensington Middlesex and of Fasgath Blenlyon Perth N.B. widow died 5 August 1918 at Fasgath Probate London 5 November to Ian Bullough retired major H.M. Army Gladys Thompson widow Miles Peel Graham retired captaim H.M. Army and Graham Beech gentleman. Effects £6634 7s

Capt Clyde Beech Rifle Brigade Robert Clyde Beech was the son of J R Beech, mentioned above. The CWGC has Clyde being the son of Mrs Alexander Beech the late I R Beech - note the spelling changes. Robert Clyde served as a Captain in the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own) and was KIA on 18 October 1916 aged 20. He is remembered along with many others on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
Lieut Alan Tompson Grenadier Guards Alan Hawtin Tompson was a son of John Alfred and Marie Louise Tompson and husband of Gladys nee Bullough, being related by marriage to the Beech family. He was educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College and lived in Africa for a while. He was KIA on 27 September 1915 aged 35 and is remembered on the Loos Memorial. Note :- SWDTGW has his entry as Alan Hawtree Tompson.
2nd Lieut Duncan C MacColl Cameron Highs Duncan Colvin MacColl or McColl as he is found in some records was the son of the Rev. John and Mrs I M MacColl of 64 Braid Road, Edinburgh. He was KIA on 15 October 1916 aged 19 and is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing.
L/Corp Francis Cowie Gordon Highs Francis was the son of Mr & Mrs Francis Cowie of High Street, Fraserburgh. He served, after enlisting in Aberdeen, in the Gordon Highlanders as 4068. Prior to him joining the forces he was an assistant factor at Meggernie - possibly the home of the Bullough family. Francis ws KIA on 13 June 1916 aged 27 and rests in Louez Military Cemetery, Duisans.

Trooper John A MacCallum Scottish Horse

John Alexander McCallum, as his name is spelt on CWGC, was the son opf Alexander and Barbara Jane McCallum of Camusvrachan, Glenlyon. John was born in Foprtingall, Perthshire and enlisted in Meggerine. He served in B Coy, 13th Scottish Horse as Pte 315378 and was KIA on 17 October 1918 aged 23 and rests in Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau.

Note :- A small plaque under the names of the local men, remembers the man who designed and erected the memorial to the fallen in 1921. That man was Alex McCallum, John's father - what better thing can a father build for his son and the villages sons, but a memorial built roadside, that all would see - built with much love and great sadness.

Private John McArthur Labour Batt  
  Kenneth M McDonald Royal Flying Corps Kenneth McRae MacDonald (spelling from cWGC) was the son of Alexander and Elsie MacDonald of Burnside Cottage, Gallin, Glenlyon. He served as Air Mechanic 2nd Class 401125 and died on 6 October 1918 aged 24. He rests in Taranto Town Cemetery Extension, Italy with over 440 other identified casualties
  Angus McGonigall Black Watch Angus McGonigill (CWGC spelling) was the son of James and Catherine Henderson McGonigill of Mount Pleasant, Smerral, Latheron Wheel, Wick. He served in the 9th Btn Black Watch as Pte S/9483 and was KIA on 23 April 1917 aged 28, resting in Wancourt British Cemetery.
